"1-2-3-Together!" This could be heard in the huddle at the beginning of every game, at the end of every timeout, and in the middle of every team meeting. It is a message of unity that permeated the entire season for this year's boys basketball team. If you remember the last article, the Geckos had just returned from the CDNIS holiday tournament as champions, looking forward to the end-of-year ACAMIS championship at TEDA International School. Over the past three seasons, the boys team has picked up one bronze and two silvers at this tournament. This year, with a starting lineup consisting only of seniors, the boys looked to finish their perfect season with a win in the frigid, sub-zero temperatures of Tianjin.
As they prepared for the first game, it was evident that this team was equipped with the skills and the focus to make it to the finals. After the first day of tournament play, the boys were 2-0, and celebrating eight dominant quarters of basketball. The next morning against Xiamen (XIS), the team that knocked them out of the finals last year, the boys played 3 perfect quarters before becoming stagnant. Failing to score in the fourth, the boys lost the game to XIS by 6 points. After finishing off the next two games handily, the Geckos sat securely in second place. This earned them a matchup with the British International School of Shanghai, four-time defending champions, in the semi finals. In the semis, the Geckos played flawlessly. The Lions from Shanghai were outmatched in every aspect of the game and, by halftime, the SIS boys had put the game out of reach. At the end of the semi-final game, the boys gathered around to discuss what lay ahead. One more game, one more chance to beat XIS. For some, this would be the last game of their ACAMIS Basketball career.
Although there was quite a bit of tension in the locker room before the game, but when the finals started there was no looking back. Locking out every rebound, protecting every possession, and running through the offense to get the best possible shot the Geckos jumped out to a 12-2 lead and never looked back. Although the rest of the game would be played very tightly, with baskets traded back and forth, the Geckos stayed glued together as a unit, and ended their season with yet another previously unachieved accolade. The final cheer of the season: "1-2-3-Champs!"
Congratulations to all of you for a great season. A special mention to Nitay, Abel and Bryan for receiving ACAMIS Tournament MVP awards.
