"...and if you play golf you are my friend."
This classic quote from the famous caddie and golf instructor Harvey Penick was the theme for this year's ACAMIS Golf Tournament. The annual event hosted by Shekou International School (SIS) at Palm Island Resort was "a great success," says SIS Athletic Director Barry Jenkin. While sport is usually measured by wins and losses, the students took something perhaps more lasting away from this year's tournament.
"This year it was more about connections between the students from the participating schools," said coaches Riley Laird and Martin Ruthaivilavan. The students were grouped, whenever possible, so that there was variety in their ages, skill levels, gender, and schools. This year's rules dictated that the players were not allowed to be coached, and the students were responsible for their own, and their group's, fair play and golf etiquette.
"We feel that this format in a golf tournament helps students develop a sense of integrity and sportsmanship," said the format creator Barry Jenkin. This sense of integrity and authenticity is at the core of SIS school culture. "Our students thrive on our campus because we strive to be transparent in every way possible, and we believe that breeds confidence and integrity," added Mike Livingston, Secondary Principal.
The four members of the SIS golf team, William Rodgers, Joon Choi, Jackie Zhang, and Lily Li, were not only great hosts but also represented the values of Shekou International School. "They showed confidence, were friendly, and played with great sportsmanship," said Coach Martin. "They were very competitive too."
Lily Li won the closest to the pin contest and finished third among the young women, and fifth overall. William Rodgers, the youngest player at eleven-years-old, finished in thirty-first place out of a field of sixty-five. "The youngest kid in the tournament ended up paired with a senior and one of the biggest guys there, imagine the confidence that takes," said Coach Riley.
Congratulations to the team, the coaches, and Athletic Director!
Barry Jenkin is already excited about next year and wants to invite parents to come out and support this annual SIS hosted event. "While parents may not be able to spectate, they are welcome to take advantage of the special package and enjoy playing golf during this great three day event."
