Gecko Boys' and Girls' Teams Win on and off the Court
Posted 11/10/2015 09:52AM

College graduates face a world that is extremely competitive. How do they learn the skills necessary to stand out once they land their first job? What characteristics and skills do employers value? Leadership and the ability to work well in a team are two of the most cited attributes that employers value. These vital skills are often learned and developed through participation in team sports.

Recently, the Shekou International School (SIS) Geckos completed their season at the ACAMIS volleyball tournament for the high school boys and girls. The boys' team won the tournament, and didn't lose a single set! This accomplishment was no fluke. This team is athletically gifted and has maturity with five seniors, but anyone who watches sports has seen talent laden teams fail...miserably! So, what was their secret to success?

The Geckos were actually down by 9 points in a crucial game (9-18), but they didn't panic, and they came all the way back to win that game 25-20. Their head coach Kenneth Tsui said, "I wasn't worried, I didn't even have to do much coaching, because our bench was coaching the players on floor." When asked about how that kind of team chemistry comes about, Coach Tsui said, "Three of those senior leaders I've had since they were freshmen. We've won and lost together over the years. They know what I expect. They knew what needed to be done."

The lady Geckos also competed hard in the ACAMIS volleyball tournament. Their young team placed 5th, and while at first glance that doesn't appear to be a successful outing, it actually was! Coach Maria Yung proudly exclaimed, "Our girls never got down, never hung their heads, and they competed hard for every point."

"...how you rise to the next

challenge, says everything

about your fortitude as a team."

- Berry Jenkin, SIS Athletic Director

In the same way Coach Tsui grew his 2015 championship team from inexperienced, young players 4 years ago, this young girls team will have the same opportunity with their coaches/mentors. That 2011 boys team had to learn how to win, and in doing that, sometimes rising above defeat and learning from a loss can be the biggest lesson.

"You know, in life you're not going to win every challenge you face. How you conduct yourself in a loss, whether you learn from that, and how you rise to the next challenge, says everything about your fortitude as a team."

The wins and losses are what get recorded, but an institution's reputation is built on the character of its individuals. Barry Jenkins, SIS Athletic Director, was proud to hear that, "Coaches from other schools commented on our awesome game play and excellent behavior. At SIS we strive to grow leaders, build teams based on mutual respect, win and lose with grace, and constantly look for ways to improve individually and as a team."

Whether it's on the volleyball court, in the classroom, or in the work place the young adults at Shekou International School are learning important life skills.
