Last weekend seven of our talented middle school boys took a trip to Jakarta, Indonesia to perform with the first ever AMIS Asian Middle School Boys Honor Choir. Up until this year, this prestigious festival has taken place either in Europe or in Asia, but this year for the first time ever there were two Honor Boys Choirs happening simultaneously: one in Europe, and one in Asia.
The boys in both festivals spent two months preparing the music with their own music teachers and then came together at the host schools for three days of rehearsals with the full choir (80 students from 10 different international schools) and culminating in a concert on Saturday night.
In addition to collaborating with students from around the world by singing in the choir, improving their musicianship and making new friends, they also experienced some fun and interesting Indonesian culture. They learned to play two songs on the Gamelon, tried out some Indonesian Martial Arts moves, and watched a Balinese traditional dance. Observing the crazy and amazing traffic in Jakarta was also an experience!
This was a memorable and life-changing experience for each of the students involved. And thanks to technology and the internet, the parents of these students were able to watch the concert via a live stream from the theatre at Jakarta International School.
