Many universities from around the world send recruiters to China. Typically they visit Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, but more and more university recruiters are making Shenzhen a stop on their recruitment tours.
In September and October, Shekou International School hosted 22 university representatives: 18 from the USA, three from Canada and one from the UK. SIS students had the opportunity to meet an additional 15 representatives from U.S. universities at an event hosted at another school. Several enterprising students in the Class of 2015 have also taken the initiative to attend events in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. In the coming weeks, four universities from Hong Kong will be making separate appearances at SIS Bayside.
The value of attending such events and hearing directly from the universities is beneficial in many ways. During the exploratory years of grades 9 through 11, it is important to hear and learn about the different programs universities have to offer and their course requirements. The latter is vitally important when it comes time to make IB subject choices in the second semester of grade 10. Students in those grades interested in going on to university should attend every presentation that is given at our school.Choosing a university is an important decision and it is important to "shop around" as much as possible before making a final decision. In a more specialized visit, 11 colleges of fine art from Canada and the U.S. visited the grade 11 and 12 Visual Art Class and gave the students feedback on their portfolios. For students in grade 12, who have a list of universities they intend to apply to, meeting with the representative from those universities is critically important because that representative is the one who will likely be reading applications coming from this region. Meeting with him or her personally and making a good impression can't hurt.
We look forward to the next round of visits from university recruiters.
