Shekou International School (SIS) is pleased to announce that it has been named an Apple Distinguished School for its internationally recognized program of learning innovation. The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for schools that are recognized centers of educational excellence and leadership. The selection of SIS as an Apple Distinguished School highlights its successes in enhancing and extending teaching and learning with thoughtful and innovative implementations of technology. SIS was the only school in greater china to be accepted in the 2014 intake. The Director of Learning Innovation, John Burns stated, "Technology like the iPad and MacBook have given us the unprecedented ability to connect, create and share with the world. When combined with contemporary teaching practices these devices have the potential to create more personal, authentic and challenging experiences for all our students."
From ECLC through to Grade 12 teachers at SIS use the latest technology and research based practice to make learning accessible to all students. This includes experiences like developing online learning portfolios, global writing partners, coding apps, printing 3D jewellery and much more. Parents attend workshops alongside teachers to learn about how to best leverage technology for learning while also enabling safe and responsible digital citizens. SIS engages the wider community by inviting experts and local and global innovators to share at professional learning events.
At SIS, spaces have also evolved to support contemporary teaching and learning. This year SIS transformed its humanities wings and faculty lounges into inviting, provocative and agile spaces that can be quickly adjusted to allow for multiple learning modes. Bean bags, dry ease paint, standing desks and other flexible furniture are being used to explore agile spaces that support a range of teaching and learning experiences.
"SIS will continue to develop its contemporary learning programs that focus on the integral use of technology to support learning," noted Dr. Dale Cox, Shekou International School's director. SIS also received a commendation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) during its recent accreditation process. "SIS has a regionally recognised culture of learning innovation that focuses on the integral use of technology to boost creativity and support student learning."
