SIS Artists Unite Together for Annie’s Sake
March 3, 2014

In preparation for the upcoming musical “Annie, Jr.” (performance on April 17-19), last Saturday over 15 students and teachers came together in the art studios on the fourth floor of Bayside Campus to design and paint sixteen backdrop panels.
Two Saturdays ago, on March 1st, was the first gathering of volunteers, and the group is growing each weekend. The SIS community still has an open invitation to join in this upcoming Saturday, from 9am-12pm. Due to the Spring Break coming up, the only other opportunity will be the Saturday before the musical (April 12th) — and this is a high order to deliver with such little time.
In order for this massive project to get done, Dr. Gifford’s Theatre Tech and Mrs. Gifford’s Show Choir classes are collaborating on a joint project during school hours using a grid pattern plan.
“This time we’re going to do something different,” stated Mrs. Yung, mentioning the various media that will be involved in the construction of the stage sets. Materials such as wallpaper, curtains, fabric, paints, and tailored light fixtures will be incorporated into the construction of the backdrops. A portable door is also being constructed in stages to be used for future musicals to come, complete with wheels and a handle.
Painting isn’t the only skill being applied in these Saturday sessions: Brandon from Grade 6 and George from Grade 9 took a hands-on approach and drilled over 100 holes into the panels in preparation.
So, come one, come all and apply your hand for the sake of drama, music and the positive role-modeling!
