What's Your Opinion 1st Grade?
Would you like to know what is truly on the minds of the first grade students at SIS? This trimester we have been learning how to express opinions in our writing. We began by first answering the question, "What is an opinion?" and "How do we develop and express our opinions?" One fun way of doing this was by having the kids bring in a collection of five or six similar "things" to school to be critically looked at and judged. Some brought toy cars, books, necklaces, stickers, etc. They each awarded one "thing" a first place ribbon. After that the writing began! Each student wrote an opinion paper about the winner and why, in their opinion, it was the best.
It didn't take long for the kids to get good at developing their opinions! Next they took those skills and began applying them towards review writing. Are you interested in learning about the best movie, book, restaurant or video game? The kids were very proud to have shared their reviews and opinions in the SIS Literacy Lounge. This was an exciting way to share their work beyond the classroom walls and receive feedback from our SIS peers. We would love more authentic comments! The students will be posting their work on their Kidblog accounts. Please visit our Kidblogs and share your opinions!
