Ratios, Proportions, Barbie and G.I. Joe
For the past couple of weeks the 7th graders have been studying about ratios, proportions, scale and similar figures. They learned how to write a ratio, how to set up proportions and solve for an unknown measurement and finally they learned about how figures can be different sizes but still be similar. This unit of study culminated in the 7th graders working on a project where they scaled up Barbie or G.I. Joe to see if these iconic dolls/action figures would actually be realistic if they were life size. The 7th graders worked in groups to find required measurements and any other measurements they thought were necessary to help create their life size picture. They then scaled up their measurements based on toy industry standards for dolls and action figures. It was very enlightening to hear comments from the students on Barbie and G.I. Joe’s real life size. I encourage everyone to have a conversation with the 7th graders about the process and their thoughts.
