3D printing and design comes to SIS in the form of a challenge-based learning opportunity where teams of students will build and operate a 3D printer!
This January, the Bayside tech team and two middle school teachers traveled into Shenzhen to visit a company that specializes in 3D printers. Less than one week later, four printer kits were delivered to Bayside and the 3D Printing and Design elective began. In this elective, grade seven students work in groups of three to assemble a printer. Their goal is to have a fully functional printer that is capable of replicating itself by printing its own parts. At all times the elective requires critical thinking and collaboration skills. Students will learn about mechanical and electrical engineering as they build the printer. They will become familiar with continual revision and the process of trial and error as they calibrate the finished printer and learn the basics of design software programs such as Google Sketch Up. 3D Printing and Design is a fantastic blend of science, technology, and the arts, and both the kids and the teachers are thrilled to be at a school which encourages and supports such innovative programs.
